Assistantships

Graduate research assistantships (GRA) are the most common form of financial assistance. A GRA consists of a stipend and benefits. Tuition may be waived for students on assistantships, but fees of approximately $500/year must be paid by all students. The tuition waiver has a value of roughly $7,000/year at resident tuition rates, or $17,000/year at non-resident rates. A major portion of the fee for student health insurance, about $700/year, is included in most GRAs.

Fellowships

New assistantship offers may be augmented with one of several fellowships, depending upon availability of funds and student's qualifications. Some examples of recruiting fellowships include the following (stipends are paid on an annual basis):

  • Cooper-Sharpless Fellowship: $3,000 for MS and $5,000 for Ph.D. students
  • Curtis Endowed Fellowship: $3,000 for MS and $5,000 for Ph.D. students
  • Filley-Garey Fellowship: $3,000 for MS and Ph.D. students
