Farm Bill Dairy Program Information

Several partners recently collaborated to deliver an education program for dairy producers covering the new dairy provisions of the 2014 Farm Bill and the new Dairy Margin Protection Program (DMPP). The new program offers producers an opportunity to sign-up and purchase protection to cover some of the revenue risk (milk price minus feed costs) in their dairy operation. The Nebraska State Dairy Association, in conjunction with UNL Extension and the USDA Farm Service Agency sponsored the program on October 30.

An archived web recording of the program is available for viewing at the following address:

There are other additional resources available to producers to help explain the new dairy program provisions and the decisions regarding the new DMPP:

  • The USDA Farm Service Agency has a webpage with information on the new dairy program provisions and related decision tools available (FSA information available here)
  • A direct link to the USDA-FSA DMPP decision tool is also available. The tool was created for FSA by the National Program on Dairy Markets and Policy working with the University of Illinois led consortium National Coalition for Producer Education (Decision tool available here)
  • RiskRisk.org, a private consulting group including specialists from several universities including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has published a recent newsletter article highlighting the DMPP and other risk management tools (Newsletter article availalbe here)
