Agribusiness

Agribusiness offers substantial career opportunities, with one in four jobs in Nebraska and one in five nationwide spanning farm management, lending, renewable resources, finance and sales. Discover opportunities to connect with agribusiness leaders and tailor your education to your career interests. The agribusiness program blends the technical competence of modern agricultural and food systems with the decision-making framework of business. As an agribusiness major, you’ll take courses from both the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), and the College of Business

Agricultural Economics

Understanding numbers in agriculture is critical to decision-making in areas such as world trade, agribusiness marketing, risk management, policy development, commodity marketing and lending or managing an agricultural enterprise. Learn to apply economic and financial principles to analyze problems in agriculture, business, government and more. The agricultural economics program offers you the opportunity to gain skills in planning, evaluation and management—useful in both private- and public-sector enterprises.

Natural Resources and Environmental Economics

The Natural Resource and Environmental Economics (NREE) major concentrates on the business side of natural resources, including the legal, political, economic and social aspects of managing our land, water and air. You’ll assess public policy governing issues, such as logging, mining, habitat restoration, agricultural production, industry and recreational use. The NREE degree program combines in-depth study of the natural sciences with economics, law and other social sciences.

AGRIBUSINESS

The Agribusiness minor is open to students in all majors at UNL. The 18 credit hour minor focuses on key aspects of agribusiness such as management, marketing, economics, and accounting. These foundational courses are paired with six credit hours of agricultural economics electives creating an option for you to tailor your minor to fit your career goals and give you a competitive edge in the job market.

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS

Open to students in all UNL majors, adding the 18 credit hour Agricultural Economics minor enhances understanding of the essentials of farm and ranch management, marketing, and economics as it relates to the environment and agriculture. With an additional five credit hours in program electives, you have the option of exploring areas of interest such as ag law and policy, agribusiness management, global agriculture, and more.

Community and Social Dynamics Minor
COMMUNITY ECONOMICS AND SOCIAL DYNAMICS

The Community Economics and Social Dynamics minor provides students with the tools for planning and developing the future of the agricultural community. Students gain knowledge with the fundamental learning objectives of sociology, economics, and administration. 

Natural Resource Economics Minor Icon
NATURAL RESOURCE ECONOMICS

This minor is intended primarily for students interested in natural resource management who are studying in technical areas such as water science, range science, soils, engineering, or fisheries and wildlife. The intent is to offer technically-oriented students an opportunity to develop complementary economics and policy analysis skills.

  • The AECN 100 New Student Career Orientation course focuses on building skills and habits that help you grow personally and professionally. Students and alumni share experiences that were gamechangers for them.
  • AECN 20, Seminar in Agricultural and Applied Economics, a sophomore-level course, provides a comprehensive understanding of agricultural economics careers.
  • Professionals in careers throughout the industry partner with the course professors to offer real-world perspectives.
  • Assist rural business owners and community leaders to enhance local resources as a fellow through Rural Prosperity Nebraska.

Community

  • AECN 376 Rural Community Economics includes a team-based community-analysis project. Near the end of the semester, teams present recommendations to community leaders—real-world experience in a community setting.
  • You will have many internship opportunities with organizations like banks, cooperatives, trade firms, seed, chemical and machinery marketing/sales, community economic or rural development and more.
  • Live with others who share your career interests in the Ag Futures, Business Leaders or Business Opportunities Learning Communities.
  • Join business student organizations, like the National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA), AgEcon/Agribusiness Club, American Marketing Association (AMA), Commodity Marketing Club or StartupsUNL.
